Celia Laval, M.A. (Counselling Psychology), R.C.C., C.C.C. (she/her) My style as a therapist is warm, encouraging and non-judgmental. Sitting in the room with a courageous person who wants to face something painful and challenging is something I find meaningful and inspiring. I aim to keep compassion and respect at the forefront while calling on knowledge about pathways for change. It is important to me to find pathways that resonate and are effective for the person I am helping based on their strengths, interests, and personal style. |
My Counselling Approach & Training
Learning and professional development are very important to me! I regularly read and take new courses to keep on top of the latest developments in the field. It is an exciting time in the field of mental health and psychotherapy. As the brain and its processes are being mapped and understood more and more, the implications for helping ourselves and others are profound and practical. The understanding brain science offers about why we get stuck can really shake the foundations of shame about our difficulties. We can also use new understandings of the brain and nervous system to help us get unstuck.
I enjoy finding what works for the person that I am working for given their presenting concern, strengths, challenges and readiness. There are many cutting edge approaches that are very profound and powerful. I am trained in the following approaches;
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR),
- Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (body-based therapy)
- Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy
I love using ways that get at the the root of long-seated problems and shifting things for the better. What these ways of working share in common is the idea of working collaboratively with mindfulness to study what comes up when we bring up the difficult issues that we are seeking to make changes with.
Other modalities I have training in and use include these ones;
- Solution-focused Brief Therapy
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
- Internal Family Systems (parts work)
- Havening
- Hypnosis
